The Inspired Tourist

Seen it. Loved it. Now live it.

Let something find you.

Inspired Tourist doesn’t necessarily mean touristy.

(Although, honestly? Touristy can be wonderful.)

It’s the language I use when I notice that some of the experiences someone wants most began in someone else’s story: a friend’s photos, a reel, a pin saved at midnight. They weren’t out looking for it. It found them, and something about it wouldn’t let go.

A travel tendency isn't something you are. It's something we may want to create room for.

What I'm noticing...

Shared joy. That’s the need underneath it all, and “seen it, loved it, now live it” is simply its language. The reel, the board and the group chat aren’t the point; they’re just how the spark arrived. Sometimes it’s world-famous, and sometimes it’s a place you can barely pronounce. You weren’t looking for Slovenia; Slovenia found you. Or, as my grandma Thelma would have put it: “Well now, say! What’s THAT?!”

Sometimes you weren’t looking for travel inspiration at all. Sometimes inspiration takes the scenic route. And sometimes it doesn’t remind us of a dream; it introduces us to one.

Popularity doesn’t diminish wonder. Just because the world has seen it doesn’t mean you have. The goal isn’t to experience it exactly as someone else did. It’s to take that inspiration and discover what makes it wonderful for you.

It might look like...

  • Watching the Eiffel Tower sparkle on the hour, exactly like the video you’ve replayed a dozen times, and finding it even better in person.
  • A turquoise river in Slovenia you pinned at midnight, and a year later, your feet are in it.
  • Opening Instagram to find a recipe, spotting vacation photos from your third-grade best friend, and thinking, “Wait. A place like THAT exists?”
  • Dancing until sunrise in Mykonos, because you saw someone else’s sunrise and wanted one of your own.
  • Grandma sharing a video of hot-air balloons over Cappadocia in the family group chat, and suddenly three generations are going.
  • Discovering that Dracula’s castle may owe more to a clifftop ruin in Scotland than to Transylvania, and adding Cruden Bay to your castle journey.
  • Finding the tiny taco stand in Mexico City from a food video, ordering exactly what they did, then ordering one more thing they didn’t.
  • Falling for a Swiss rail journey at 22 and saving for three years to ride it.

Different sparks. Different journeys. Different versions of the dream.

The same “I DID that!”

What gives it room to breathe

  • Starting with what caught your eye. Bring me your pin, your board, your saved reel, or your group chat full of “WE NEED TO GO HERE!” messages. Then tell me what you love about it.
  • An honest look behind the photo. Season, access, stairs, and what it really takes to get there, so the real thing lives up to the reel, or surpasses it.
  • Knowing your crowd. Sunrise at the famous view before the tour buses arrive, or midnight on the dance floor when the crowd is the whole point. And a gentle morning after either one.
  • The right way to get there. A small group, independent travel with a little scaffolding, or a journey designed entirely around you.
  • A version that fits your life. Sometimes that means next month. Sometimes it means a plan to get there, and that counts too.

What can crowd it out

(Sometimes literally.)

Other people’s expectations quietly rewriting your vision. Arriving at the famous view at noon with every tour bus in town, when sunrise would have given you the place almost to yourself. Trying to fit every saved pin into one trip. Watching the whole moment through your screen. Feeling a little sheepish about loving something “touristy.” Trusting the reel to tell the whole story, without asking about the season, the stairs, or the forty-minute boat ride nobody filmed.

None of these is wrong; they simply leave this part of you less room.

Not every crowd is the problem, though. Sometimes the crowd is the experience: the dance floor in Mykonos at four in the morning, a festival in full swing, a Christmas market humming with mulled wine and carols. The trick is knowing when the crowd is part of the magic, and when it’s getting in the way.

It doesn't necessarily mean...

  • Famous. Some sparks are world-famous; others are a tiny village you’d never heard of until last Tuesday.
  • Young. Plenty of Inspired Tourists have grandchildren, and Pinterest boards to prove it.
  • Posting it. Share it with the world, with your best friend, or with no one at all. (Though just because others have seen it doesn’t mean your selfie won’t look even better.)
  • Going tomorrow. Saving for years to live your version still counts.
  • Copying someone’s trip. Their moment introduced you to something wonderful. Your version is yours.
  • Every trip. This part of you may lead one journey and sit quietly through the next.

You found the inspiration. Let’s find your way there.
